RILEY CREEK ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Stay Sharp over the Summer

In order to get off to a good start next school year, I highly recommend that all students continue working on Khan Academy over the summer. You should work on the Past Assignments and Mastery Challenges. If you go up 10% or more on your course mastery (whatever grade you were in during the 19/20 school year) I will award you 50 paw prides during the first week of school, in the fall. Think about the buying power of 50 paw prides in the first couple weeks of school!

If you are an 8th grader this year, and go up 10% over the summer, come visit me at Riley Creek and I will hook you up from my store.

Online student work during School Closure

1) 20 min of khan Academy per school day (100 minutes in total per week). Here is a link to the Khan Academy website where students can log in their account. https://www.khanacademy.org/login?continue=%2F

  • work on your active assignments and mastery challenges

*You do not need to complete all of the active assignments. I would rather you do a few, and get high scores than do all of the assignments and get low scores. You can redo an assignment as many times as you want to. Keep going until you get 100%! Because you can retry the assignments, don't hesitate to use the hints when you get stuck.

2) I will assign one new Big Ideas (online textbook) assignment per week for students to complete. If a student works on the assignment for 100 minutes before the due date, they will receive full credit, even if they do not submit the assignment. Here is a link to the Big Ideas website where students can log into their account. https://www.bigideasmath.com/BIM/login

* If a student needs their login info for either of these websites, send me an email, or give me a call (see contact info at the bottom of this page) and I will provide it promptly.

Ideally, I would like all students to do both tasks listed above, however they are only required to do one of them

Math Paper Packet Instructions during School Closure

If you choose to pick up the paper packets from school, I will provide an answer key for the previous week with the next week's packet. For example: included in the week 2 packet will be the answer key to the week 1 packet work. On Mondays students should review and revise work from  the previous week before moving on to the current week's work. Click the link below for directions on how to revise your work.

Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions. My contact info is at the bottom of this page.

Math Games to Play as a Family during School Closure

All students have played these game in class. If your child does not remember how to play, please contact me (see bottom of the page for contact info)

Game 1: Throw Out

The point of this game is for students to become fluent in the 4 mathematical operations without using a calculator. Parents, please show your child your preferred method. I don't mind what method a child is using as long as they can continually get the correct answer. Make it more challenging by using bigger numbers and or decimals.

  • NO Calculators
  • choose how many digits, and what operation (addition, subtraction, division, multiplication) choose a different operation each week
  • use dice, download a random number generator app, or make a home made spinner)

Game 2: Krypto

You can:

  • make your own Krypto deck, (google how many of each card should be in the deck)
  • download the Krypto App
  • request an official deck from me via email or phone call (I will then arrange how you can receive it)
